Car Theft Drops In Region's South

GOOD news from police who have revealed the Lake Illawarra Area Command is no longer a car theft hot spot.
This covers a wide area from Port Kembla to Gerringong which has experienced a 51 per cent drop in car theft on the previous year.Once ranked right up there with Bankstown as the state leader for car thefts, Lake Illawarra has now dropped to a respectable 15th.In real terms, it means a big drop in the number of people who have to suffer the inconvenience and financial burden that goes with the discovery your car is no longer in the place you left it.How this impacts on insurance premiums is hard to say at this stage, but that in time may also be a plus. The figures also have a positive impact on otherwise beautiful areas of the Illawarra whose residents had to unfairly endure the car theft capital tag earned by a small, unlawful minority.Innovative crime fighting techniques have been credited for achieving these results. These include monitoring known criminals, based on the theory that only a handful of people are responsible for a large number of car thefts.Police do not get a lot of accolades but this is one instance where it is well and truly deserved.
