A man who allegedly received stolen GIO Insurance cheques totalling more than $62,000 appeared in Wollongong Local Court yesterday.

Nassib Morkos has been charged with 22 counts of receiving stolen cheques for workers' compensation payments.

Defence solicitor Craig Osborne told the court that two former employees of the GIO workers' compensation group had allegedly ``handed out money improperly" and had been subsequently charged.

Mr Osborne said Morkos had a legitimate workers' compensation case which stemmed from an injury in the late 1980s.

He said his client did not know the cheques were stolen and intended to plead not guilty to the charges.

Police allege Morkos, 57, received the stolen cheques at Tahmoor, Picton and Camden.

The alleged offences began on May 23, 1996 and ended on May 27, 1997.

Morkos, of Arina Rd, Bargo, was arrested and charged by Commercial Crime Agency detectives on March 10 this year.

Registrar Lance Templeton ordered that a police brief be served by April 27 and he adjourned the matter to May 4. Morkos is on continuing bail.
