Community Aid Order For Organising Car Theft

Newcastle Herald

Tuesday February 16, 1999

AN East Maitland woman who commissioned four juveniles to steal her car so she could claim insurance money has been ordered to appear before Maitland's community aid panel.

Krista Flannery, 18, unemployed, of Lochend Circuit, pleaded guilty in Maitland Local Court yesterday to making a false statement to obtain money.

Police facts tendered in court said Miss Flannery attended Maitland police station on January 17 to lodge a report about her stolen car.

Police said Miss Flannery and her boyfriend had previously spoken to four juveniles who arranged for the theft and disposal of the vehicle.

Miss Flannery had told police she had lost her job and had said she was not going to be able to keep the vehicle.

Police prosecutor Sgt Terry Gannon told the court `it was an unfortunate fact of life that these offences were becoming more prevalent.'

Police facts said Miss Flannery was a well respected member of the community with strong family support.

The car was insured for $3000 through the NRMA.

Magistrate Ms Sharon Crews ordered Miss Flannery to attend the community aid panel and adjourned the matter for sentence on May 3.
