Insurer's New Drive To Reduce Car Theft Claims

THE NRMA announced an insurance premium discount yesterday for all owners of Hyundai Excel sedans who had engine immobilisers fitted to their vehicles.
It was part of a drive to reduce claims for car theft, which last year involved a $140million payout, part of an annual national car theft bill of $1billion.
The NRMA has started with Hyundai because it is one of the prime targets for car thieves, among the top 10 categories of car, by model and year, which are the subject of insurance claims for theft each year, and the only late model car in the top 10.
NRMA industry research manager Robert McDonald said the Hyundai Excel was the most commonly stolen `small car' ? costing less than $20,000 ? in NSW and the ACT.
Those who owned a Hyundai would get a reduction of up to $100 in their comprehensive insurance premiums. This applied to all new policies for Hyundai owners and Hyundai policies up for renewal after October 25. ? Malcolm Brown
